The University’s public art collection is highly visible, placed in areas where the pieces become a part of everyday life adding interest to parks, plazas, and indoor atriums. This substantial statue now graces the entrance of the Texas Tech library, but it once stood in a Wells Fargo Bank lobby fountain for more than 30 years.
The UNM Public Art Collection is a curated collection that enhances the quality of life of the campus community and visitors, while advancing the University’s academic mission. With unexpected and arresting sculptures tucked around corners and in buildings, public art creates countless moments for spontaneous community building and conversation. The public collections are cataloged, managed, and shared by institutions such as Cornell University, Colby College, RISD, and MIT using JSTOR Forum, a cataloging and image management tool. Today, forty years later, the collection numbers more than 350 works, located not only on the main campus, but on the Clear Lake, Downtown, Victoria and Sugar Land campuses as well. Since then there have been more than three-dozen public artworks installed on campus. Staying Connected to Art and Each Other In mid-March, just as the Art Museum’s Student Advisory Board (SAB) was diligently planning its spring programming, the University announced that all students were to leave campus for the remainder of the semester. The sculpture installation was commissioned through the Art in Public Places Act in partnership with the Oklahoma Arts Council and the Henry Bellmon Research Center. “UH was the first state institution in Texas to initiate a percent-for-art program,” explains Mike Guidry, UHS curator of public art.
