The word Ilavar was not used, when we had expected it to be used. The Sinhalas are this root or stem from which all the others have their existence. They want to communicate that there is only one root or stem from which everything else derives its existence. This inscription from Tirupparankunram in Tamilakam, which is written on a stone-bed, runs:erukatur ilakutumpikan polalaiyan “Polalaiyan, (resident of) Erukatur, the husbandman (householder) from Ilam.”.This may be the oldest now available reference to the word Ilam.The word Ilam can, however, be understood just as name of the island without any thought of toddy.

He refers to a phonological process within “pure Sinhala”, but for an explanation of the formation of the word Ilam, he should refer to a phonological process that takes place within Tamil when Tamil adopts and Indo-Aryan loanword. One possible meaning is “toddy” or “arrack”. Nalin da Silva, who is a native Sinhala speaker with evidently no inclination to learn even elementary Tamil declination and phonology, probably means the suffix -um.
