La Morte Darthur was an immediate sensation upon publication. ., 1894. There is some offsetting from the illustrations to the facing pages. While Aubrey's work is unusual, there is a simplicity to his work that is filled with detail (i think I said that correctly). The hand-painted cover illustrations for this set reproduce two of Beardsley's designs, Volume One depicting "How Four Queens Found Launcelot Sleeping" (p. 184) and Volume Two "The Achieving of the Sangreal" (frontispiece). Margins of upper corners of part 1 lacking small pieces, approximately one centimeter, and spine of latter abraded. Leonard Smithers, together with Arthur Symons and Aubrey Beardsley, conceived The Savoy as a successor to The Yellow Book which, having spurned Beardsley after its fourth issue due to his connections with Oscar Wilde, had become rather vanilla. In 1892, seeking to emulate the books of the Kelmscott Press, John M. Dent commissioned the 20-year-old Beardsley to produce this edition, work that took the young artist 18 months to complete.
