It's based on a true story about and by Lee Israel. It is a deeply moving story and I couldn't help feeling somehow on her side, given her plight it is difficult not to even considering that what she did was so wrong. Lee is 3 months behind in her rent, and out of sheer desperation, she sells a framed letter that Katherine Hepburn once wrote to her. Lee Israel is presented in a way that it seems like forging letters and hiding behind other people's identities was a natural transition for her because, as she admits near the end of the film, she is a coward who never really developed her own unique "voice" as a writer. true story, we learned that Lee Israel grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn and attended Midwood High School.
